Access Control System Basics

Whatever your business may be, you need security to keep your customers, employees, and any sensitive information safe. One way to provide that safety and security is with an access control system.

Access control systems are much more sophisticated than your average lock and key, offer better protection and are convenient for employees, customers, and business owners. There are several different types of access control systems with any combination of them working in tandem to create the custom security network your building needs.

What Type of Access Control System Is Best for You?

You may have a high-security environment that requires the highest level of access control. Or you may have more modest needs, such as providing photo ID badges that allow or restrict employee access. Access control systems vary widely in complexity and type, but most of them consist of at least these basic components:

  • Access Cards & Card Readers – An access card can be thought of as an electric “key,” being used by persons to gain access through doors secured by the card reader. Each card is uniquely encoded and is read by the card reader.
  • Access Control Keypads – Access control keypads have a numeric keypad, similar to the keypad on a phone. Users must enter the correct numeric code on the keypad in order to gain entry.
  • Visitor Management System Solutions – In most buildings, visitors are required to sign in on a paper ledger. Although cheap and easy, these provide almost zero security. A visitor management system like temporary key cards, lobby cameras, or special check-in software can be installed to manage visitors to your building better.

This is certainly not an exhaustive list of all of the access control security available. However, these are some of the more popular options and can be used together or alone to upgrade the security of your building.
