What is your role at State Systems, and what do you do?
I am the office manager. I take care of any day-to-day issues that may come up. Some of my responsibilities include human resources, payroll, sales/use taxes, and I work closely with our bookkeeper and our president, Bob McBride. I oversee the administrative department which includes account payable and receivable.
How long have you worked for State Systems?
This November, I will have been with the company for 18 years. When I first started, I was hired by Bob’s father, the late Robert McBride Sr., and Bob’s mother, Mrs. Ione McBride, as an accounts receivable clerk. Five years later, I became the office manager.
How did you come to work for State Systems?
I am originally from Bowling Green, KY. I decided to travel around a little bit and while travelling through Memphis, I met my husband. We have been married for 24 years, and I am the proud mother of one son. While working as the manager of the soft lines department at Sam’s Club, corporate wanted department managers to begin to work two nights weekly and three weekends per month. I wanted to be at home with my son on nights and weekends, so I left to work for the better hours at State Systems. That’s when I learned how family-oriented they were, and I was glad I made that choice. It’s been a good experience.
What do you like most about working for State Systems?
It’s a family-friendly environment. When I first started working for State Systems, my son was starting the first grade. If I had to meet a deadline, I could pick him up at school and bring him back to work with me. While I would work to meet the deadline, he was able to sit at a desk and do his homework. Also, I just love coming to work. It’s a lot of fun. I’ve made many friends here, and I couldn’t ask for a better boss.
What is something your co-workers probably don’t know about you?
My Christianity is very important to me, and I am active within my church. Bob allows me to leave on the third Friday of every month to assemble baskets at my church to feed the elderly and families in need of assistance. I have been able to do this for the last 15 years. I’m also a 22-year cancer survivor.
What do you like to do for fun and for leisure when you are not working?
I like shopping. I shop practically every day whether it is by catalog shopping or online shopping. I also love sewing. If I didn’t work, I would probably pursue clothing design. I also like gardening, bowling, movies, and family activities.
What is your most memorable experience at State Systems?
On Bob’s 40th birthday, his wife Nancy sent him a singing telegram. She did a birthday song and skit. All of this was a total surprise to Bob and he was caught off guard. If you know Bob, then you know he is very business-oriented. To sit through this was probably one of the hardest things to do for him, and he was so glad when it was over. The bad thing about it was on his next birthday, an employee dressed up like the lady and redid the same skit and he had to relive it all over again. Since then, we’ve taken it easy on the gift giving.
