Bi-Directional Amplifier Systems
A Bi-Directional Amplifier System (BDA) – also known as an Emergency Radio Communication Enhancement System (ERCES) or Distributed Antenna System (DAS) – amplifies radio frequency signals in buildings to improve radio communication coverage, cellular signals, and sometimes even outdoor coverage.
Because reliable paths of communication are critical during emergency situations, modern building codes as well as NFPA standards dictate that new and existing buildings have appropriate radio coverage to enable emergency responders to be able to communicate effectively throughout the structure. Distributed Antenna Systems facilitate this communication by ensuring that portable radio signals reach all areas of the building.
At State Systems, we can install a BDA alongside your fire alarm system to keep your building compliant and first responders safe.
What are the Components of a BDA System?
A BDA System is made up of the following components:
- Bi-Direction Amplifier (also known as a signal booster)
This device amplifies RF signal in two directions simultaneously.
- Dedicated Monitoring Panel
This component integrates with a building’s fire alarm panel but is independent and helps to monitor the integrity of the communication signals.
- Battery Backup
This device provides 24 hour emergency back up in case of power failure.
- Distributed Antenna System
This is a network of spatially separated antenna nodes connected to the BDA by coaxial cable.
Codes & Standards
Some construction features can absorb, block, or diminish radio communications. For this reason, ERCES requirements have been put in place by various agencies. These systems are required by International Building Code and International Fire Code, and are specified in NFPA-1221 and NFPA-72 in order to address the performance of emergency responders’ radios inside of buildings.
How to Determine if a BDA System is Required for your Building
Our technicians will perform a radio frequency survey to measure the downlink/uplink signal strength. The results of the survey are submitted to the fire marshal who determines if the distributed antenna system is required in a building.
State Systems has partnered with Honeywell to provide a reliable and effective UL-2524 Listed Bi-Directional Amplifier System for your building.
