There are two main types to choose from: analog and IP cameras.
Analog Video Surveillance Cameras
Despite technological improvements and the benefits of IP video surveillance cameras, many companies still use analog to protect their property. What business owners don’t realize is that they may be disappointed by the quality of what is being recorded.
Analog cameras are measured in TVL (the number of lines on the TV screen or monitor) and range from 420 – 700 TVL. As a baseline, a surveillance system that uses 600 TVL will produce an image that has a resolution of 720×525 pixels. In comparison, IP cameras are measured in megapixels and even the most basic IP surveillance camera has a much higher resolution than the more advanced analog cameras.
- A mid-range analog camera that uses 600 TVL will produce an image that has a resolution of 720×525 pixels
- A mid-range IP camera that has 3 megapixels will produce an image that has a resolution of 1248×1546 pixels
That’s a difference of over 1.5 million pixels between the two types of cameras. That discrepancy can have a huge impact on the depth of detail you are able to see from the cameras on the monitors or in the recordings. These details could include car license plates and faces.
Resolution of analog cameras that are bought packaged in a store may seem like a cost effective solution, but they are really only optimal for short range recording or if you don’t need to review the footage in high detail.
IP Video Surveillance Cameras
Some properties have analog cameras installed and have not switched over to IP because of the tendency to do partial security system upgrades or the perceived high cost of designing and installing a new system. While analog cameras may be cheaper individually, the cabling required for non-digital systems can make them more expensive to install and maintain.
However, IP video cameras offer many advantages that make the system worth it. IP cameras:
- Are more reliable and durable
- Are faster and operate at a higher level
- Don’t need to compress, transfer and decompress the recording as analog cameras need to—a process that can decrease quality and lead to loss of data
- Have much higher resolution—allowing for detailed images
- Can be powered by the nearest power hub within 300 feet—in contrast, analog cameras must have power delivered to each individual camera
- Can incorporate an audio feed and recording as well—increasing surveillance and security
- Can send a video feed to any place or device at any time (without cabling)
