Fire pumps must be fully tested annually at rated, under minimum and peak flows to ensure proper operation. Test results should be compared to the original factory rating.

Fire pumps must be churned, which mean to run them without flowing water, often. Diesel engine-driven fire pumps need to be churned weekly for a minimum of 30 minutes. Electric motor-driven fire pumps should be churned monthly, for a minimum of 10 minutes.
